Scott #356 Coil Height Analysis.
As part of my ongoing research into the Scott #356 paste-up I have made an effort
to measure the height of all the paste-ups in the census. As can be seen
from the measurements in the table the 18 genuine paste-ups are, on average,
very near the ideal height of 25mm. The maximum height averages 25.48mm
and the minimum averages 24.6mm. Census 356PU-CAN-SNGL-19 and
356PU-UNU-PR-20, both deemed fake by the Philatelic Foundation, have heights
that fall within min-max range found in the genuine paste-ups - for that reason
I beleive that in both cases the PF was wrong and both paste-ups are genuine.
On the other hand, census 356PU-UNU-SNGL-16 (APEX) and 356PU-UNU-PR-22
(PF) are both very short justifying the opinions of "Fake". I will counter
by saying that it is known that in rare cases paste-up joints were trimmed at
the time of manufacture to even out misregistered joints resulting in short
measurements. Though I believe that both "Fake" paste-ups are most likely
genuine I feel that there needs to be more study done on these two before final
judgement can be passed.
