Suspect Scott #386, Unused LH Single. (12/23/15)

This is a moderately expensive stamp that catalogues for $130 as an Unused single. This stamp can be made by adding perforations to a trimmed imperforate #384, adding perforations to the top and bottom of the #384V imperforate coil, trimming the perforations from the left and/or right edges of a perforated #375 or trimming the perforations from the left or right edges of a #375a booklet pair.

The watermark is a reversed single line “S” at the top that reads horizontal which eliminates the possibility that the suspect is a fake made from a booklet single.

The width of the suspect is just under 21.5mm which is ideal. The edges are very straight and parallel with each other.

The next two images show the suspects perfs overlaid on genuine #374 perforations.

As can be seen there is a fit problem between the suspect’s perforations and the genuine perforations. The suspect’s perforations gauge out to 12.08 on the top and 12.095 at the bottom which is way of the nominal reading of 11.93. The perforations themselves have issues – they are too round, the perforation tips are too flat.

As can be seen the suspects edges match very well with the #332a booklet edge.

Conclusion: In my opinion the suspect is a #384V imperforate coil single with fake perforations added at the top and bottom.
