Suspect Scott #443, Used Single (7/29/16).

The Experts Book says that this coil is often faked and can be made by adding perforations left and right and trimming the top and bottom of the imperforate #409, by adding perforations to the left and right of the imperforate coil #409H and trimming the perforations off at the top and bottom of the fully perforated #425. Catalogue value: $50.00.

The watermark is an inverted normal “P” in the bottom left corner that reads horizontally.

The height of the suspect is 25mm at the left and right which is ideal for the issue. The edges are both faily straight and are parallel with with each other. The top and bottom edges show evidence of being genuine.

The images below show the suspects perforations overlaid on genuine gauge 10 perforations.

As can be seen the suspect’s perforations match well with the known genuine perforations. There is one perf hole that is out of alignment but that is most likely due to a bent pin in the perforation machine. The perforations show evidence of being genuine – slightly oval in shape, rough on one side and smooth on the other, there is evidence of presure ridges.

The two cut edges on the left and right are mirror images of each other indicating they were cut with the same edge.

Conclusion: In my opinion the suspect is a Scott #444 genuine in all respects, the perfs are missing on the left due to a misaligned stamp affixing machine, the bottom right corner is folded back on itself. Needs to be sent to APEX for a certificate.

As always comments and suggestions are always welcome.
