Suspect Scott #136 (Grilled), Used Single (12/27/20).
I bought this stamp on EBay for approximately $12.00 as a suspect fake with the goal of getting it off of the market and doing a proper analysis on it. The Scott #136 is not an expensive stamp if real with a catalogue value of $32.50 used. The paper was checked and it is hard white paper which the #136 was printed on.
As can be seen from the above image the suspect has a 13 X 15 grill pattern with the points down on the face. This grill pattern fits the “H” Grill that was applied to this issue. The suspects grill measures (from point to point) 9.5mm X 11.375mm while the “H” Grill gauge measures 9.5mm X 11.875mm. The width of the suspects grill is exactly the same as the gauge and the height is only off by 0.5mm which I believe could be accounted for by paper shrinkage. Below is an image of the “H” Grill gauge overlaid on the suspect.
In conclusion I’m going to say that the suspect is a genuine #136, at some point in time I will send the suspect in to be expertized. I took the suspect to the 2019 Summer Seminar at APS where I took the Large Banknote clase and showed the instructor the suspect and he believes it to be genuine and should be sent in for a certificate. As always comments and suggestions are always welcome. To Contact Riverside Stamps:
