Suspect Scott #348, Unused Single (5/31/19).
The Scott #348, Double Line Watermarked, Perf 12 Horizontally, Flat Plate Press Vertical Coil. This is a moderately priced stamp with a catalogue value of $40.00. This coil is often faked and can be made from a #343 by adding counterfeit perforations to the top and bottom, from a #343V imperforate vertical coil by adding counterfeit perforations to the top and bottom, from a #331 by trimming the perforations off the left and/or right, and from a #331a booklet stamp by trimming the perforations from the left or right (most likely would be done with a stamp from the first or second row). A check of the watermark shows a normal double line “U”, at the top. The watermark reads horizontal which eliminates the possibility of the suspect being a booklet single.
The width of the suspect is 21.125mm at the top and just under 21.25mm at the bottom which is a little narrower than the ideal 21.5mm +/- 0.3mm width. The edges are wavy but for the most part are parallel with the frame. The edges show no signs of perforation remains.
The images below show the suspect’s perforations overlaid on genuine #331 perforations. The perforations show good signs of being genuine.
Conclusion: In my opinion the suspect is a Scott #331 with the perforations trimmed off the left and right edges. Reference material used:
