Suspect Scott #353, Used Single (6/1/19).
The Scott #353, Double Line Watermarked, Perf 12 Vertically, Flat Plate Press Horizontal Coil. This is a moderately priced stamp with a catalogue value of $220.00. This coil is often faked and can be made from a #344 by adding counterfeit perforations to the left and right, from a #344H imperforate horizontal coil by adding counterfeit perforations to the left and right, and from a #332 by trimming the perforations off the top and/or bottom. The watermark is a reversed double line “S” on the left side and reads horizontal which eliminates the possibility of the suspect being made from a booklet single. The image at the left is the suspect in watermark fluid in natural light, the middle image is digitally enhanced to bring out the watermark and the image at right is the face of the suspect flipped horizontally to show the cancel as it would be seen from the back.
The top and bottom edges are rough and are not parallel with each other or the frames the height of the suspect is 24.25mm at the left and right which is shorter than the usual 25mm +/- 0.3mm.
Below is a comparison of the suspect’s perforations against the known good perforations of a Scott #331. As can be seen from the images below the suspects left and right perfs match the known genuine perforations. The perforations show the signs of being genuine.
Conclusion: In my opinion the suspect is a Scott #332, used single, with the perforations trimmed away from the top and bottom edges. Reference material used:
