Suspect Scott #410, Unused Single (3/19/16).
This is an often faked coil with a catalogue value of $6.00 for a HH unused single. The Experts Book states that this coil can be made by adding perforations to a trimmed imperforate #408, adding perforations to a #408V imperforate coil. The watermark is at the top right corner and appears to be single line “U” or the top of an inverted “P”. At the bottom left corner there should be visible a second watermark fragment of either the top of a “U”, top of an “S”, bottom of a “P” or the bottom of an “S”. Unfortunately any watermark in the bottom left corner is faint or hidden by the offset color.
The width of the suspect is 21.5mm wide at the top and bottom. The edges are straight and parallel with each other but not the frame. The images below show the suspect's perforations overlaid on genuine gauge 8 1/2 perforations.
As can be seen the suspect’s perforations match well with the known genuine perforations. The perforations show evidence of being genuine – slightly oval in shape, rough on one side and smooth on the other, there is evidence of presure ridges. Conclusion: In my opinion the suspect is a Scott #410, unused HH single, pulled perforations at bottom leaving a large gap that goes into the frame, pencil notaion on the back, genuine in all respects.
