Suspect Scott #411, Unused Single (3/19/16).
The Experts Book says that this issue is often faked and can be made by adding perforations to the left and right edges of a trimmed imperforate #409 or adding perforations to the left and right edges of the imperforate vertical coil #409V. There is no fully perforated gauge 8 ˝ stock from which this coil can be made from so if the perforations prove to be genuine then the suspect is genuine. Catalogue value is $10.00 The watermark appears to be a single line “U” in the bottom left corner.
The width of the suspect is just over 21.5mm wide at the top and bottom. The edges are straight and parallel with each other and the frame. The images below show the suspect's perforations overlaid on genuine gauge 8 1/2 perforations.
As can be seen the suspect’s perforations match well with the known genuine perforations. The perforations show evidence of being genuine – slightly oval in shape, rough on one side and smooth on the other, there is evidence of presure ridges. Conclusion: In my opinion the suspect is a Scott #411, unused HH single, pencil notaion on the back, genuine in all respects. Reference material used: The Expert's Book.
